About the Item

Liz Wall. Welsh ( XX - XXI ). Siren. Watercolor and Ink. Signed and Dated 2011 Lower Right. Image size 11.4 inches x 18.9 inches ( 29cm x 48cm ). Frame size 25.6 inches x 26.8 inches ( 65cm x 68cm ). Available for sale is this original watercolor and ink drawing by Welsh artist Liz Wall dated 2011. The work is presented and supplied in a sympathetic contemporary mount and frame (which is shown in these photographs) and behind glass. This piece is in superb condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. This is a stunning image from an almost unknown artist, quite unlike most of her other work. Very reminiscent of 20th century LP album cover art. A tasteful and intriguing interior decorators piece. In the foreground is an exquisitely drawn black and white image of a young woman, shown to her waist, naked. Her left arm is outstretched as if she is leaning on her hand. Her right arm is clasped across her chest, half hiding her breasts. Her face is beautiful with high cheekbones and mesmerising eyes. She looks out, intently with a serene, enticing expression. She has delicate, almost transparent gossamer-like wings unfolded from her back and we suspect that she is in fact a magical creature, perhaps a fairy. The background is a mass of brightly colored daisy like flowers, pinks and white, with yellow centres, and behind them is sweet pale green grass. © Big Sky Fine Art

Noel Laura Nisbet. English ( b.1887 - d.1956 ). Such Young Love. The Anticipation of a Kiss. Watercolor. Signed. Image size 17.3 inches x 13.8 inches ( 44cm x 35cm ). Frame size 25.4 inches x 20.9 inches ( 64.5cm x 53cm ). Available for sale; this original painting is by Noel Laura Nisbet and dates from around 1930. The watercolor is presented and supplied in its original frame that has an Arts and Crafts aesthetic. This antique painting is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is ready to hang and display. The watercolor is signed lower right. Noel Laura Nisbet was an English oil and watercolor artist, who painted figures, landscape, fantasy and romantic scenes. She created some wonderful original Pre-Raphaelite-influenced works which are now much sought-after. She was the youngest daughter of Hume Nisbet, a Scottish artist, author and traveller, whose support and generosity enabled her talent to flourish. The family moved from Scotland to London in 1887 and Noel was born in Harrow on 30 December that year. Noel attended the Notre Dame Convent school in Clapham, then studied art at South Kensington, under L.C. Nightingale, where she won three gold medals and the Princess of Wales Scholarship (established on 1863 to reward the most distinguished female art student in the UK and what is now the Republic of Ireland). Noel’s elder sister Margaret also became an artist. In 1910 Noel married Harry Bush, who she had met as a fellow art student. They went on to have two daughters. Harry was away for most of the Great War, and Noel stayed with her daughter Hazel in Bath Cottage in Speen. A few years later her father set up his artistic daughters in two matching houses, with purpose-built attic studios, on an estate then being built in south west London. The address of Noel Nisbet...

Denis Auguste Raffet (1804-1860) Studies of characters Black pencil and watercolor on paper 18.5 x 25.5 cm Stamp of the Raffet Estate Sale (1911) on the lower right In good condition, foxings on the original mount Framed 34 x 40 cm Denis Auguste Marie Raffet (2 March 1804 – 16 February 1860) was a French illustrator and lithographer. He was a student of Nicolas Toussaint Charlet, and was a retrospective painter of the Empire. At an early age he was apprenticed to a wood turner, but took up the study of art at evening classes. At the age of 18 he entered the workshop of Cabanel, where he applied his skill to the decoration of china, and where he met Rudor, from whom he received instruction in lithography, in the practice of which he was to rise to fame. He then entered the École des Beaux-Arts, but returned to lithography in 1830 when he produced on stone his famous designs of Lützen, Waterloo, Le bal, La revue, and Les adieux de la garrison, by which his reputation became immediately established.[ Raffet's chief works were his lithographs of the Napoleonic campaigns, from Egypt to Waterloo, vigorous designs inspired by ardent patriotic enthusiasm. In this endeavor he was a contemporary of other French artist-lithographers of Napoleon and the French army including Hippolyte Bellangé, Horace Vernet, and Nicolas Toussaint Charlet. As an illustrator his activity was prodigious, the list of works illustrated by his crayon amounting to about forty-five, among which are Béranger's poems, the History of the Revolution by Adolphe Thiers, the History of Napoleon by de Norvins, the great Walter Scott by Auguste Defauconpret, the French Plutarch and Frédéric Bérat's Songs. He went to Rome in 1849, and was present at the siege of Rome, which he made the subject of some lithographs, and followed the Italian campaign of 1859, of which he left a record in his Episodes de la campagne d'Italie de 1859. His portraits in pencil...
