About the Item
This charming 19th century watercolour depicts people gathered around a table. The soft light of the fire illuminates the three figures who sew and talk into the night. The motif has a strong resemblance to the work of Dutch painter Joseph Israels who was renowned for capturing peasants and their struggles with a great sense of humility. This painting has many similarities to Israel's' work with its dark interiors and charismatic figures that have depth and substance in the stories they portray. Unsigned. Presented in a reeded black lacquer frame with a gilt slip. On paper.
