Antonio Calderara (Abbiategrasso
1903 - Vacciago 1978). "I would like the color to lose its
nature of matter to purify itself into reality of light," the artist wrote.
If because of the uniqueness inherent in his work, it is difficult to
tracing him back within a current, his research
on abstraction is affected by influences coming from a
side by Fontana's Spatialists, on the other by German artists and
swiss of the analytical area. Starting from the basic figuration
optic-perceptual, his investigation since 1959 lands
to abstraction, which consists of the use of light seen in time
and in space.

Antonio Calderara
Antonio Calderara is a self-taught and changeable artist. In 1954, the study of Mondrian's work led him first to the study of light and then to a progressive loss of the landscape reference, increasingly moving towards an aniconic expressive form that saw him participate in European research, mostly ones of German origin. In his autobiography, he traces the first non-figurative painting to 1959. Calderara spent most of his life in isolation near Lake Orta, most of which he spent wondering about the role of light and color in an attempt to answer the question, what is painting?
