About the Item

Anthony Thomas Triano (1928–1997) was an abstract expressionist painter, sculptor, illustrator and teacher. His works feature natural forms, especially the human form, and tend toward the abstract. He exhibited in 37 one-man shows and numerous group shows. His works can be viewed in collections, such as The Newark Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, the Lowe Museum in Coral Gables, the New York Lithographic Society, Abbott Laboratories, the Hartford Art Foundation, the Monmouth Historical Society, Johnson and Johnson, J.L. Hudson, House and Garden Magazine, Seton Hall University and Law School, the University of Alabama, William Paterson University, Wykeham Rise, the Golden Lemon on St. Kitts, the Library of Congress and Wuhan University in the People's Republic of China. "My enterprise was inspired by the great sculptor Reuben Nakian from whom I inherited a rare insight of history, myth and art," Triano wrote in a brief autobiographical essay. "His most valuable gift to me were a total and passionate study of art of all ages, the importance of subject matter, a constant drawing style and the ultimate way of sculpting with terra cotta." At the end of World War II, he enrolled at the Newark School of Fine Arts, where he studied under the GI Bill and became a friend and apprentice to the great sculptor Reuben Nakian. This affiliation presented an early sophistication and association with Jackson Pollack, Willem DeKooning, Franz Kline, Charles Egan and other dynamic personalities of the greatest art adventure of the 20th century. In 1971 Triano was appointed artist-in-residence at Seton Hall University and became a full-time professor the following year. Triano was born in 1928 and was raised in Kearny and North Artlington, New Jersey. As a child Triano was an avid illustrator, a hobby that he continued at age sixteen when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Triano was stationed in the South Pacific and continued to draw, finding his subject matter in the war. Upon the ending of the World War II, he enrolled at the Newark School of Fine Arts under the GI Bill of Rights in 1946. While at the Newark School of Fine Arts he became a friend and apprentice to famous sculptor Reuben Nakian. Nakian helped Triano develop his own version of Abstract Expressionism. Triano’s works are featured in public and private collections, including the Newark Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, the Johnson & Johnson, William Paterson University, and Seton Hall University, among many others. "Famous as a painter, sculptor, illustrator and educator, Anthony Triano has been one of our most versatile and prolific artists. He is noted for his unique ability to embody the essence of humanity and nature upon large canvases, in fluent terracotta and ceramic sculptures and on jewel-like surfaces with radiant monumentality. True to the legacy of this experience, Triano devoted his life to the study and development of a significantly universal style. His creations are constantly evolving in such series as: Each Day, The Wonders, Heaven and Earth, Geo, The Passions, A Sound of Angels, The Elegance of Women and The Olympians. His works have been exhibited in 37 one-man shows by prominent galleries, corporations and museums, featured in numerous publications and the subject of 12 television programs. • Mercedes Matter, New York School Abstract Figures
    By Mercedes Matter

Mercedes Carles Matter (1913 - 2001) Untitled, circa 1937 Pastel on paper 16 x 13 1/2 inches Estate stamped on the reverse Provenance: Estate of the artist Spanierman Gallery, New York Private Collection, Pennsylvania circa 2013 Private Collection, New York, 2021 Mercedes Matter was born in New York in 1913. Her father, the American modernist Arthur B. Carles, had studied with Matisse. Her mother, Mercedes de Cordoba, was a model for Edward Steichen. Ms. Matter grew up in Philadelphia, New York and Europe. She began painting under her father's supervision at age 6, and studied art at Bennett College in Millbrook, N.Y., and then in New York City with Maurice Sterne, Alexander Archipenko and Hans Hofmann. In the late 1930's, she was an original member of the American Abstract Artists organization and worked for the federal Works Progress Administration, assisting Fernand Léger on his mural for the French Line passenger ship company. Léger introduced her to Herbert Matter, the Swiss graphic designer and photographer, whom she married in 1939. The Matters were active in the emerging New York art scene and also traveled frequently to Europe. Their closest friends included Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Franz Kline, Philip Guston, Alexander Calder and Willem de Kooning. They were also close to Alberto Giacometti, who was an important artistic role model for Mrs. Matter and a frequent photographic subject for her husband. Beginning in 1953, Mrs. Matter taught at the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts), Pratt Institute and New York University. Based on her teaching experiences she wrote an article for Art News in 1963 titled ''What's Wrong with U.S. Art Schools?'' In it, she lamented the phasing out of the extended studio classes required to initiate ''that painfully slow education of the senses,'' which she considered an artist's life work. The article prompted a group of Pratt students to ask her to form a school based on her ideas, which led, in 1964, to the founding of the New York Studio School. Originally in a loft on Broadway, the school gained almost immediate support from the Kaplan Fund, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Ford Foundation. It granted no degrees, had only studio classes and emphasized drawing from life. Its teachers, chosen by the students, included the artists Guston, Bradley Walker Tomlin, Charles Cajori, Louis Finkelstein...
